You may think of it as a prime summer destination but locals know it’s a gem year-round. From the food to the shops to the gorgeous Victorian homes and landmarks, it’s one of our favorite NJ spots for a getaway.

At the Mad Batter, ordering a stack of three pancakes for breakfast, either with blueberries or chocolate chips, is a Cape May tradition. Sit down for lunch at The Lobster House, but ask to dine dockside and order from the raw bar for a true Shore experience. Beach Plum Farm has a beautiful farm-to-table dinner service where each dish is made from locally sourced ingredients. No matter what time of year, be sure to grab a cup or cone at Fine Fellows Creamery.

Victorian homes are a big part of Cape May’s charm. The Southern Mansion was built in 1863 and recently renovated into a bed and breakfast. Or you can tour the Emlen Physick Estate, which is also a museum and hosts events throughout the year (wait for the ghost tours in October).

Stroll along Washington Street Mall for its shops, gourmet foods and local goodies. Or rent a bicycle at The Bike Shop at Congress Hall. If it’s time for a break, take a trolley tour through the area. Or if you’ve never tried railbiking, it’s a great way to see the area while riding in a two- or four-person seated bike along decommissioned railroad tracks.

There are lots of outdoor activities, such as visiting the Cape May Lighthouse and climbing its 199 steps to the top. Cape May Point State Park has stunning views of the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, plus it’s the perfect place to go hiking, birding and nature watching. And of course, any of the beaches are beautiful for sunrise, sunset, and everything in between.
